Steps of action

1

Contact Your Representatives

Multiple states have outlawed the use of "Excited Delirium" as a cause of death, and you can pressure both national and local representatives to take a strong stance and denounce Excited Delirium. The states that have outlawed it will act as examples for other states to follow suit.

2

Pressure medical organizations

Medical organizations are a very powerful entity that is entirely capable of educating people on Excited Delirium and rejecting its legitimacy as a cause of death. These organizations have a responsible to practice, encourage, and enforce ethical medical care, but we must pressure on these organizations to do so.

3

Support medical research

Many medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, have rejected Excited Delirium. It is important that we support these organizations and their research into various consequences of the history of racism in medicine such as Excited Delirium syndrome.

4

Raise public awareness

Raise awareness of this issue whatever way you see fit, whether it be in conversation, on social media, or participating in various forms of activism. It is also important to continue to inform yourself of the history of the syndrome and to be aware of other ways that the racist history of medicine influences the medical field today.

5

Demand accurate reporting

It is important that we demand accurate and credible reporting on all deaths involving police. In any death cited as caused by Excited Delirium, it is the responsibility of journalists to thoroughly investigate the situation, what happened, and then share this information with the public. Without the media, vital information pertaining to these deaths may not become public, and justice would be unlikely.

6

Restructure law enforcement

The final step that would genuinely solve this issue and many others like it is a complete restructuring of our law enforcement institutions. Echoing the arguments of the abolition movement, we can only solve the issue of racist law enforcement if we abolish the entire institutions and dedicate more time and funding to things like mental health training and services, community involvement, social services, and communal unity.
